Success Stories

"I reached out to Risa Trinker to see if she would work initially with my son and then later with my daughter to help them study for the English portion of the ACT. My children are one year apart and are very different learners. I sought to find someone who would be able to understand the differences in my children’s style of learning and be able to accommodate for those difference. Risa knew how to break her lessons down in order to keep my son motivated and more focused. For my daughter, she understood that more broad-based independent learning with lengthier assignments would be more challenging, and ultimately would work best for her. Risa does prefer in-person lessons but with my son that was not possible because he was tutored during Covid. For my daughter, Risa was extremely accommodating, allowing many lessons to be via zoom since we live in Livingston, NJ and my daughter, who is a tri-varsity athlete, had very limited availability after school. The best part was that both of my children learned so much from Risa. I remember my son telling me that he never learned any of the grammar that Risa taught him in school (sad for Livingston Public Schools but props to Risa). They both also did extremely well on their ACT, and both being very happy with their scores they each only took the standardized test once. I recommend Risa highly to anyone who asks, and I recommend her to you too!"

"At the end of my sophomore year, I planned to study for the ACT over the summer of 2021. I didn’t want to use a book, and I wanted a more personal environment than a class or study group. I was also working and playing 2 sports over the summer, so I needed flexible hours to work around my busy schedule. I first talked to Risa because she helped tutor my older brother for his ACT. Considering she met all of my specifications, I began working with her in June of 2021. She helped me schedule a diagnostic ACT to determine my starting level and to see what I needed to improve on. After receiving a 31 on the diagnostic, we spent the summer meeting once a week on Zoom for about an hour, where we would work on learning grammar rules and take practice tests. Each week, I was given a small assignment to have completed for the next class. In September 2021, I took my first (and only) ACT and got a 35, with a 35 on English and a 34 on Reading. Risa was super easy to communicate with and was always willing to adjust our meeting time to work with my schedule. Not only did Risa effectively prepare me for my ACT, she also taught me English skills that I carried with me throughout the remainder of high school."

"I have used Risa for 2 of my 3 children and just reserved a spot for my 3rd. Before choosing Risa, I interviewed 2 other highly recommended tutors and after speaking with Risa, there was no question she was the right one. Risa was the only tutor that first spent time teaching the basic principles on the test. She has a tried and true approach and then after the basics, she starts them on the practice tests. Both of my kids did fantastic on the ACT. Risa is smart, flexible and very smart about how to get kids ready. HIGHLY recommend. She is our secret weapon!"

"Risa is a pleasure to work with and her structured method of tutoring works. Our daughter’s ACT score went up significantly after working with Risa and her overall skills improved. Risa related well to our daughter and was personable, engaging and clear. She was always accessible to discuss our daughter's progress and needs. I highly recommend her!"
